Conventions

At first, we were unsure of what film genre we wanted to use, so we decided to research the conventions of Drama, Action/Adventure and Thriller films to see if this made our decision easier.

Dramas include:

  • Real-life situations and people, normally played in a serious way.

  • Tackling emotional themes like poverty, mental health issues, addiction, discrimination etc.

  • Presents a journey of the characters physically and (usually) emotionally- at best and at worst.

  • A protagonist that is relatable.

  • Usually an abrupt plot twist.

  • Challenges the stereotypes and norms.

  • Filled with climaxes and anti-climaxes to keep the audience emotionally involved.

  • Normally set in 'rougher' areas e.g. council estates.

  • Clear groups of people such as protagonist, antagonist, family and/or friends of protagonist.

  • Opening ends on a cliffhanger.

  • Dark lighting/ clothing.

Action/Adventures include:

  • Always has at least one antagonist and protagonist.

  • Lots of handheld shots and fast cut editing.

  • Protagonist is often aced with dangerous situations.

  • Very complex plots that are built up through protagonist dealing with problems/obstacles, which also helps to build up/develop character.

  • Not realistic

  • Tries to keep audience on the edge of their seats and keep them watching.

Thrillers include:

  • A fight/clash between protagonist and antagonist.

  • High tempo music and fast cuts.

  • Uses low key lighting.

  • A lot of close ups and extreme close ups.

  • Use of jump cuts.

  • Slow tempo music that builds up to increase tension.
